The war in Ukraine not only affected Ukrainians. It also arrived in many Russian families. The whole society is split in two camps: the protesters against and the supporters of “the special military operation”. There is no neutrality anymore. And “mutual understanding” isn’t possible. Every Russian citizen has someone amongst their family and friends with whom after the 24th of February they can no longer converse, or at least have to minimise all contact. Parents break up with children, wives with husbands, sisters with their brothers... No arguments seem to work as people believe the propagandists on TV easier that their own loved ones.
Andrey Loshak’s documentary Broken Ties is about the families that were broken by the war in Ukraine. Seven pairs of people, the closest to each other, give their separate accounts of the breakup. Andrey is asking them the same questions, but…
